Thusitwouldappeartobedemonstrable,that,notwithstandingthegreatchangewhichisexhibitedbytheanimalpopulationoftheworldasawhole,certaintypeshavepersistedcomparativelywithoutalteration,andthequestionarises,Whatbearinghavesuchfactsastheseonournotionsofthehistoryoflifethroughgeologicaltime?Theanswertothisquestionwouldseemtodependontheviewwetakerespectingtheoriginofspeciesingeneral。Ifweassumethateveryspeciesofanimalandofplantwasformedbyadistinctactofcreativepower,andifthespecieswhichhaveincessantlysucceededoneanotherwereplacedupontheglobebytheseseparateacts,thentheexistenceofpersistenttypesissimplyanunintelligibleirregularity。Suchassumption,however,isasunsupportedbytraditionorbyRevelationasitisopposedbytheanalogyoftherestoftheoperationsofnature;andthosewhoimaginethat,byadoptinganysuchhypothesis,theyarestrengtheningthehandsoftheadvocatesoftheletteroftheMosaicaccount,aresimplymistaken。If,ontheotherhand,weadoptthathypothesistowhichalonethestudyofphysiologylendsanysupport——thathypothesiswhich,havingstruggledbeyondthereachofthosefatalsupporters,theTelliamedsandVestigiarians,whosonearlycauseditssuffocationbywindinearlyinfancy,isnowwinningatleasttheprovisionalassentofallthebestthinkersoftheday——thehypothesisthattheformsorspeciesoflivingbeings,asweknowthem,havebeenproducedbythegradualmodificationofpre-existingspecies——thentheexistenceofpersistenttypesseemstoteachusmuch。Justasasmallportionofagreatcurveappearsstraight,theapparentabsenceofchangeindirectionofthelinebeingtheexponentofthevastextentofthewhole,inproportiontothepartwesee;so,ifitbetruethatalllivingspeciesaretheresultofthemodificationofotherandsimplerforms,theexistenceoftheselittlealteredpersistenttypes,rangingthroughallgeologicaltime,mustindicatethattheyarebutthefinaltermsofanenormousseriesofmodifications,whichhadtheirbeinginthegreatlapseofpregeologictime,andarenowperhapsforeverlost。
