LeavingPaudio,wehadKirk\'sRangecloseonourleftandatleast3000feetaboveus,andprobablynotlessthan5000feetabovethesea。Fartoourrightextendedalonggreenwoodedcountryrisinggraduallyuptoaridge,ornamentedwithseveraldetachedmountains,whichboundedtheShireValley。Infront,northwards,layavalleyasrichandlovelyasweeversawanywhere,terminatingatthemountains,which,stretchedawaysomethirtymilesbeyondourrangeofvisionandendedatCapeMaclear。Thegroupsoftreeshadneverbeensubjectedtothelandscapegardener\'sart;buthadbeencutdownmercilessly,justassuitedtheconvenienceofthecultivator;yetthevariouscombinationsofopenforest,slopingwoodland,grassylawns,andmassiveclumpsofdarkgreenfoliagealongtherunningstreams,formedasbeautifulalandscapeascouldbeseenontheThames。ThisvalleyisnamedGoaorGova,andaswemovedthroughitwefoundthatwhatwassmoothtotheeyewasverymuchfurrowedbyrunningstreamswindingroundinnumerableknolls。Theselittlebrookletscamedownfromtherangeonourleft,andthewaterwasdeliciouslycool。
WhenwecameabreastofthepeakChirobve,thepeoplewouldnolongergiveusguides。Theywereafraidoftheirenemies,whosedwellingswenowhadonoureast;and,proceedingwithoutanyonetoleadus,ortointroduceustotheinhabitants,wewereperplexedbyallthepathsrunningzigzagacrossinsteadofalongthevalley。Theyhadbeenmadebythevillagersgoingfromthehamletsontheslopestotheirgardensinthemeadowsbelow。Toaddtoourdifficulties
